While it did finish in first place, New Year's Eve dropped the ball this weekend with a disappointing 13 million US dollar opening, way below the industry expectations.

Comparing to its predecessor, "Valentine's Day," which grossed 14.5 million US dollars in its first day of release, and ended with a gross of total 110 million US dollars , it was just not a very good starting point for "New Year's Eve."

No.2 went to Jonah Hill's comedy "The Sitter," which opened with 9.85 million US dollars. The film, which is Hill's first try as a solo actor, failed to impress the audience. Critics didn't really like the R-rated Fox release that talks about a slacker who babysits a wealthy couple's three spoiled kids.

As the actor failed the test at the box office, "The Sitter" may have a hard time reaching more audiences after receiving a disappointing C+ CinemaScore.

After leading for three-straight weeks, "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1" dropped to no. 3 with 7.8 million US dollars.

What's worth mentioning is that on Saturday, it officially passed "The Hangover Part II" and became the third-highest grossing movie of the year, only behind "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" and "Transformers: Dark of the Moon." "Breaking Dawn part one" has so far made 633.4 million US dollars worldwide.

"The Muppets" stayed on the chart as No. 4 with 7 million US dollars and a total ticket sale at 65.7 million US dollars. "Arthur Christmas" earned 6.5 million US dollars this past weekend, pushing the total ticket sale to 33.4 million US dollars.
