Argentina's Supreme Court has made a ruling earlier this week, making abortion legal for all rape victims in the country.

Abortion is banned in much of Latin America, home to about half the world's Roman Catholics. Some countries allow abortion in the case of rape, but only Cuba and Guyana have fully legalized the procedure.

Some judges said that the ruling meant that abortions were only allowed in cases in which a woman "of feeble mind" was raped, while others argued it meant that no woman should be punished for having an abortion after she was raped.

Under Argentine law, abortion is only allowed in cases where the mother's life or health are at risk, or if the woman is mentally disabled. Still, an estimated 400,000 to 600,000 illegal abortions are carried out in Argentina each year.

Civil groups such as Central Workers Union welcomed this ruling, saying that it not only helps rape victims by terminating their pregnancy, but also save them from the risks of having illegal abortion under unsanitary or dangerous conditions, and protect the woman and the doctor.

The Supreme Court also ruled that in future, women would not have to seek judicial permission to get an abortion if they had been raped, as a sworn statement given to the doctor would suffice.
