The superheroes continued to dominate the box office for a third weekend in a row as the "Avengers" held on firmly to the number one spot breaking more records in the process.

Avengers raked in 55 million US dollars on its third weekend, reaching the second largest third weekend gross in history trailing only the 68.5 million of Avatar.

Overseas, The Avengers banked another 56 million US dollars in its fourth round for a 111.1 million global weekend. The international ticket sale has rocketed to 723.3 million bringing the worldwide tally to a staggering 1.18 billion. The Avengers has climbed to the fourth spot on the all-time global list, just behind Avatar, Titanic, and the final Harry Potter. Avengers has become the top-grossing movie of all-time for Disney.

Audiences were not very excited about the new releases as the big-budget Battleship suffered a poor opening with 25.3 million US dollars at second place. Costing at least 209 million to produce, the sci-fi actioner failed to impress critics and audiences as reviews were mostly negative.

Still, Battleship opened a month earlier in international markets where it found more success, earning 226.8 million outside North America. Battleship is expected to finish at around 325 million US dollars, which is just a break-even ticket sale for Universal.

The Sacha Baron Cohen comedy "The Dictator" failed to match the comedian's past performances, as it raked in only 24.5 million at No. 3 since its debut last Wednesday. Dictator tells the story of a North African dictator who risked his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed. Reviews were mostly good, but not good enough to please its viewers as it received a troubling C grade from CinemaScore.

Dark Shadows plummeted 57 percent to an estimated $12.8 million at No.4 in its second weekend. That brought the movie's 10-day total to $50.9 million, and Tim Burton and Johnny Depp's vampire soap opera revival is unlikely to end up with more than 100 million.

The all-star pregnancy comedy "What to Expect When You're Expecting" debuted in fifth place with 10.5 million US dollars.

Even with a star-studded cast, including Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Elizabeth Banks, the film received more negative reviews than positive ones as audience gave it a B- CinemaScore.
