With the advent of July, the typhoon season is again around the corner. This year, the total number of typhoons is expected to be fewer than usual, according to the Central Weather Bureau. But most of them will likely hit Taiwan in autumn with potentially greater intensity.

After the monsoon season, it comes the typhoon season. The heavy typhoon Morakot last year taught us a good lesson about typhoon prevention. There was only one typhoon in the Northwest Pacific region from January to June this year.So the Central Weather Bureau predicts that the number of typhoons and tropical storms may reach between 20 and 23 and Taiwan is likely to be struck by two to four typhoons this year.

There's a decline in sea temperatures in the East Pacific, indicating development of a La Nina. The average of autumn typhoon was 0.4 a year. But the figure rises to 0.7 during the year with the La Nina phenomenon, indicating a possible higher chance of stronger typhoons in the fall.

Since it's now officially the typhoon season, typhoon prevention work is needed. In the next three days, the college entrance exam will take place and the weather will be hot and humid, with the highest temperature reaching 34 degree Celsius and thunder storms in the afternoon. So family members of test-takers should protect themselves from the sun and bring an umbrella during the days.
