Taiwan's guava has become the farmers' new hope.A Changhwa argiculture co op dried the guava leave into tea leaves. They want to turn this community tradition into a product that can earn money.Studies by academics also show that guava leaf can help control blood sugar levels and fight against oxidization.

Eating the core of the guava leaf or using it to make tea in the older generation's view is a way to help lower blood sugar levels.Agricultural co ops have been trying hard to commercialize it in the past. But because of the bitter taste and lack of academic proof, they weren't able to attract consumers.

For the past ten years, market demand has been weak because of the lack of technology. But the co op has been able to solve the bitterness problem. It also worked with academics to demonstrate the leaves' ability to control blood sugar levels and fight oxidization.

Farmers hope this will become another way to make money. Each town has their own industry.Shetou Township's farmers have found a new produce to make money. Its 450 hectares of guava farms will provide the leaves. The partnership between farmers and academics hopes to find a new avenue of sales as agriculture becomes more internationalized.
