Also taking effect today is a measure aimed at reducing energy waste in public spaces like shopping malls. Air-conditioning in these places will be closely monitored to prevent cool air from leaking out, and the replacement of conventional light bulbs is also mandatory.

Many will no longer be able to keep their air conditioning set too low as beginning on July 1st,the Ministry of Economic Affairs will monitor tourist hotels, hypermarkets, department stores, chain grocery stores, cosmetic stores, for a total of 7 different service industries. These mandatory measures include monitoring for leakage of air conditioning despite the coming and going of many customers.Though it may be difficult, these businesses are asked to cooperate fully.

In the past we remember, some chain drug and cosmetic stores being fully open with no doors with cool air blowing which was a waste of electricity.Beginning last year, many stores began to gradually install automatic doors to achieve greater energy savings. The Ministry of Economic Affairs estimates that if all shops install automatic doors, a typical summer day could see savings of 1.5 billion units of electricity. Meanwhile, these seven service industries must fully replace incandescent bulbs by July 1st. Otherwise, they will be liable for a fine between 20,000 to 100,000 NT$.

In addition, Taipei City is taking the lead in promoting energy-saving regulations requiring customers using more than 100,00 kWh of electricity per month need to maintain an indoor air temperature at 26 degrees.July to December will be implementation and promotion period with inspections beginning next year. Those businesses that perform well in this matter will receive a round decal, something to encourage these businesses to reduce carbon emissions.
