Five years ago, the tourism bureau spent more than NT$70 million to produce a series of music and video clips to market Taiwan's tourism. But recently, legislators found out nearly identical clips from the Taiwan videos in the marketing videos of the Xiamen tourism bureau.
While criticizing the outrageous copycat culture of China, legislators also lambaste the administration for being incapable of protecting the country's intellectual property rights.
In 2005, the tourism bureau launched a series of videos with newly composed English songs and scenes around Taiwan.
The project cost more than NT$70 million in print media, electronic media and foreign media advertisement exchange. But now, legislators have discovered that the Xiamen tourism bureau used the same music in its marketing video, but with deleted lyrics that specifically mentioned Taiwan.
The Xiamen tourism bureau videos even include the same clips of Taiwan. While legislators believe that the Xiamen tourism bureau copied Taiwan's marketing clips, the Tourism Bureau says a local content provider produced the music and the video and it has requested through the Cross-Straight Tourism Exchange Association that their Xiamen counterpart to replace the music.
The Taiwan tourism bureau says it will first try to know how the music was obtained before deciding whether to bring a lawsuit to protect its own interests.
