On the Chungshan high way, near the section of Sanyi of Miaoli County, there's a big and bare mountain called "Huo-yen mountain." The sight is quite impressive to drivers. Back in 1986, the mountain was planned as a cultural asset and designated as a nature reserve for its unique geological interests. Its geological structure was formed by dramatic tectonic movements and consists mainly of conglomerate and sandstone layers with very weak cohesion. Therefore, the area is prone to serious landslide when torrential rains pound the region. A preliminary estimation shows the mountain recedes northward by 10 centimeters per year.
The most eye-catching landmark on the Chungshan highway through the Sanyi section of Miaoli must be the famous Huoyan mountain, which is located next to the south of Da-an River. It is known for its special scenery featuring sharp bare hill as its geological structure was formed by dramatic tectonic movements and consists mainly of conglomerate and sandstone layers with very weak cohesion. Natural forces such as wind and rain have eroded these mountains, causing large sections to break off, creating jagged peaks and rock strewn slopes and valleys.
In 1986, the Council of Agriculture designated the area a nature reserve. The mountain is rarely opened to the public unless for educational or research purposes, in order to maintain its original looks. However, the mountain's natural look is always why it's prone to natural disasters. But the forestry bureau can only monitor the mountain, without intervention, over the worries that the unique geology would disappear.
Since the mountain has a rich biodiversity, the forestry bureau plans to set up an administration station in Sanyi of Miaoli and offer limited guided tours to visitors.
