Of all sorts of cancers afflicting Taiwanese people nowadays, colon cancer is the most common form, and it is closely linked to diet habits. Experts say that the public should watch their intake on roasted or fried food, especially meat, to lower the risk of this major disease. In recent years, barbecue restaurants have been quite popular in Taiwan. Fast food restaurants, offering hambergers, fries and fried chicken, are also one of the top dining choices given its convenience. However, these foods contain high calories and grease and are likely to take a toll on one's health. According to the Department of Health's statistics, cancer has been the leading cause of death for 27 years in a row. The most prevalent form of cancer is colon cancer, followed by liver, lung, and oral cavity cancer. The occurence rate of colon cancer is rising. Almost every 50 minutes, one is diagnosed to have come down with colon cancer. People nowadays consume 50% less rice but 38% more meat than people 25 years ago. The consumption of vegetables such as broccoli and cucumber is down by 14% while that of potato is on the rise.In light of the changing habits of citizens, the department of Health also updates the daily food guide of six major food groups, suggesting people to take three to six bowls of grain products, one to two portion of milk products, three plates of vegetables, two to three spoons of oil, four portions of meat and two portions of fruit.
