2010 marks the 200th anniversary of Frederic Chopin's birth. To celebrate the achievements of the Polish genius, the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra has invited Vietnamese-French classical pianist Dang Thai Son to perform the master's works for audiences in Taiwan. Dang Thai Son, known for being the first Asian pianist to win the prestigious International Frederick Chopin Piano Competition in 1980. Having played Chopin's music for almost all his life. This time, Dang is to collaborate with National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra to perform the Chopin Piano concerto No.1. This year, five other young pianists from Taiwan are selected to enter the final competition with 81 competitiors worldwide for the international competition. During his stay in Taiwan, Dang took time to instruct these young Taiwanese pianists and he believes that Asian pianists have a special sensibility. 20-year-old Sheng Meng-shen, who studies at the Juilliard School and Huang Shih-wei, now a graduate student at the music program at Yale University are two of the Taiwanese finalists,who are now preparing for the final competition, held in Warsaw in October.
