According to emergency room statistics, cases of bone fracture in cyclists has been on the rise lately. Doctors say that the majority of accidents took place on downhill slopes, where cyclists tend to be riding too fast.
29-year old Mr. Miao was riding his bicycle at Riverside Park last weekend when he swerved to avoid another cyclist and fell off his bike.
He landed on his left side, and ended up with a painful dislocated shoulder.
The number of injured weekend cyclists in Taiwan is on the rise, with the majority of accidents occurring on downhill slopes.
Hospitals are treating an average of ten injured cyclists per day this summer, which is a 20% increase.
As cyclists generally land on their sides when they fall off their bicycles, 50% of all patients are treated for fractures or broken bones.
Doctors say that high-impact falls can result in pneumothorax, which can be fatal. In the event of a fall, patients should immediately stabilize and ice the injured body part, and seek medical treatment as soon as possible.
Prevention is also key, and cyclists should therefore remember to always wear safety helmets and wrist, elbow, shoulder, and knee pads.
