In the wake of several cases of juvenile delinquency, many people are once again deploring the failure of Taiwan's education. Educators pointed out that more emphasis should be put on building the students' character than on developing their academic skills only.

Juvenile killer Liao Guo-Hao, when he surrendered, said Taiwan's education had harmed him.

Cardinal Paul Shan said Liao had come from a broken home, and at school may have often made mistakes and may have lost face in front of other students leading him to give up on himself.

This may have led him to look outside for a sense of achievement, acting violently.

The cardinal said that school teachers should have been able to give more individualized attention.

Many educators lament, that even judges have been sent to prison for taking bribes, as even college students on the bus are beating people with their fist for a seat as these recent events show that both school and family education are showing major problems.

Some scholars say that traditional moral education should come from the heart though the importance of character is also a vital component of education.
