To enhance one's love for reading, the Hsinchu City Government is implementing independent reading session everyday for 10 minutes at local schools. While teachers assign the topic of study, students are given a wide variety of books to select from.

With a visible increase of students visiting the library, the new method has proven to stir up their motivation.

During recess, students don't seem to want to stop reading extracurricular books as they are more interesting than textbooks.

In order to cultivate students' reading habits, the Hsinchu City starts to launch the ten-minute reading program in the morning.

The city government allocated nearly NT$2 million in subsidizing 42 junior high schools and elementary schools to buy books.

So during the morning individual study hours, students are no longer required to prepare for tests, but they can read extracurricular books that interest them.

However, choosing books is a big challenge for teachers. In just two weeks after the semester starts, almost all the books on the library shelves have been borrowed, proving that the new program to cultivate reading habits in students is a great success.
