Typhoon Fanapi will likely reach full strength on Sunday and Monday, and flood prevention measures have been taken around western Taiwan and especially in areas that were affected by Typhoon Morakot last year.

Typhoon Fanapi has been slowly gaining strength, and is expected to reach full strength on Sunday and Monday. The storm will first hit eastern Taiwan, which is on high alert for flooding and landslides.

According to the Central Weather Bureau, the slower a typhoon moves, the more damage it will cause. The best example is Typhoon Morakot, which devastated Taiwan last summer.

The two typhoons are traveling similar paths from the ocean to Hualien. Like Morakot, Fanapi is expected to linger outside of Hualien for three hours before making landfall.

Unlike Morakot, Fanapi will likely cut across central Taiwan rather than moving north. Fanapi is expected to affect weather all over the island, and will make landfall around noon on Sunday.

Rainfall will begin increasing on Saturday night, and torrential rains are being forecast for southern and central Taiwan.

Coastal areas in particular should be taking preventative measures against saltwater intrusion.
