Glove puppetry is widely considered as Taiwan's quintessential art form, though the stories it portrays are almost exclusively set in mainland China. But now, through the efforts of master Wang Yi-ming, events from the island's history have finally made their way to the glove puppet stage.

In order to defend their land, the Siraya Pinpu people launch a battle which is dramatically displayed by these puppets.

The Golden Ray Glove Puppet Theater conveys many childhood memories though most have to do with the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Journey to the West and other Chinese-based stories.

Many stories have never been performed in Taiwan, as the puppet master Wang Yi-Ming, and playwright Chen Jyia-Cheng and composer Hsieh Ming-Yu spent six months time to prepare a story 200 years ago.

It involves the Pin Pu tribe and the Han Chinese fighting a wicked plot, and large battles with 40 to 50 roles making it a very big challenge for Wang.

In order to faithfully present this historical legend, all the puppets have to be re-produced with clothing that is accurate as the cost was nearly one million NT$.

Wang says his greatest wish is to bring this performance to Taiwan as Taiwanese can have their own stories.
