The Ministry of Justice is planning to amend its policy on death penalty by replacing capital punishment with a lifetime sentence without parole. However, the new policy has triggered different responses. The Taiwan Alliance to End the Death Penalty has expressed approval while many people consider it as a waste of government resource. The Ministry of Justice has formed a special team to investigate on how to do away with the death penalty. After numerous meetings, the team has decided to replace the death penalty with life without parole. This team is also looking at setting the sentence between at least 25 years to 40 years. Parole would be under strict guidelines. The Taiwan Alliance to End the Death Penalty supports this new policy. But they also said the current 44 inmates on death row should also be transferred into this new program. According to the Justice Ministry's statistics, inmates sentenced to jail without parole usually only serve 12 years before being released on parole. Thus, the public usually views parole terms as overly relaxed. Therefore, many of the country's citizens don't accept life without parole replacing the death penalty. There are two sides to this new policy. This special team needs to further study their proposal on how to persuade the judge to sentence an inmate to life in jail rather than the death penalty, overcome public doubt, and set parole guidelines. ◆ 追蹤更多華視影音及圖文新聞: 1.用Plurk追蹤華視影音及圖文新聞:追蹤 2.用Twitter追蹤華視影音及圖文新聞:追蹤
