Have you ever wondered what the most common names are here in Taiwan? Now we have the official answers. The Ministry of Interior has just released a survey based on the latest household registration data, which shows that "Chi-ming" is the most widely used name for men across the island, as "Shu-fen" is for women.

The first job for parents-to-be is to name their child.

According to Ministry of Interior's statistics, the most common names for male are Chi-ming, Jia-hao, Jun-jie, Jian-hong and Jun-hong.

The most common girls names are Shu-feng and Shu-hui, a lot more popular than other common names such as Mei-ling, Ya-ting and Mei-hui.

Parents of different generations prefer specific characters.

The character "Hsiung" is very common among men in their sixties or seventies.

"Chi" is frequently seen in names of those in their 40's and 30's.

The most common name for men in early 20's and late teens is Jia-hao, Guan-yu and Guan-ting.

For females, Yu-lan, Hsiu-ying, Hsiu-ching and Li-hua are popular names for those who are now in their 40s, 50s, and 60s.

Shu-feng is the most common girl's name among 30s and 40s.

Ya-ting and Yi-chun become the next popular names for those born in 1980s and 1990s.

In the analysis, Ministry of Interior found that Chen is the biggest surname in the country with 11% of population sharing the family name.

Lin is the second biggest surname, with 8.3% population.

Other common surnames include Huang, Chang and Lee.

Besides the common names, there are unique surnames listed in the book, which perhaps can serve as a reference for parents trying to name their babies.
