Over 1,000 people took part in the Chinese Character Festival at National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall in Taipei City to celebrate the country's centenary. At the National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, 125 artists portrayed their works through the painting exhibition, hoping to let the public witness the changes of Taiwan through their brushes. More than 1,000 people joined the calligraphy event held in National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall to celebrate the country's 100th anniversary. President Ma wrote the character "Prosperous" with hopes that the country can have a prosperous year. He stressed the importance of traditional Chinese characters and encouraged people in Mainland China to try to read them. Another cultural event is a painting exhibition held at National Dr. Sun Yat-sen memorial Hall, which showcases Taiwan's diverse cultural features. Painter Chen Hui-tung, who did paintings for former presidents, created an oil painting called " Harvest" based on the theme of fishermen catching milkfish. He believes this image can represent the accumulated achievement of Taiwan in the 100 years since its establishment. Paintings from 125 contemporary painters are showcased in the exhibition. The combined age of them all exceeds 9,000.
