The Executive Yuan recently approved a new program that will allow students from China to pursue academic degrees in Taiwan. And the first batch of mainland students will begin their studies here as early as next September.

Four months after the three bills on allowing mainland Chinese students to study in Taiwan were passed in the legislature, the Executive Yuan has finally approved the laws on December 30th. In as soon as March, colleges and universities can start to sell their brochures and begin recruitment process. Students could also participate in joint-degree programs.

The regulations specify that Mainland Chinese students are not allowed to study in

subjects related to Taiwan's national security, work or be eligible for scholarships.

The cap of 2,000 students each year is also specified in the corresponding measures.

But there's one exception, colleges in outlying islands can recruit undergraduate students without the cap.

Finally, it's the moment that colleges and universities have been waiting for.

In next month, the Ministry of Education is to approve the number of students for each school, which would only get a quota of no more than 5 Mainland Chinese students.

However, for schools, at least they can see Mainland Chinese students starting this September.
