Schools around the island are feeling the effect of Taiwan's low birth rate as many of them are forced to be merged with one another, leaving many vacant classrooms behind. And now with the help of Taipei city's Department of Cultural Affairs, the empty classrooms are renovated into rehearsal spaces and offices for art groups, which greatly help the groups to continue their works.

Four years ago, Beitou's Yifang Elementary School relocated to a new campus.

Its vacant buildings and dormitories were recently turned into rehearsal studios and offices for art troupes that are facing financial difficulties.

The six troupes that have moved in are only asked to pay for water and electricity and their own renovations.

According to the Taipei City Department of Cultural Affairs, art troupes find it extremely difficult to continue operating due to rising commodities prices, and the number of vacant campuses around the city is also on the rise due to Taiwan's low birth rate.

Therefore, policy can help the troupes set down roots.

The six troupes now based in New Beitou's Zone 71 will hold periodic performances to boost interaction with area residents, and the city government hopes that the art park can not only be a source of support for troupes, but also bring art into the community.
