While the economy has gradually recovered, the need for financial aid by students from Taichung's low-income families has actually increased instead of lessening, a fact that has even surprised Mayor Jason Hu.

Concerned that students from low-income families have trouble affording meals during the winter break, the Taichung City government and the district prosecutorial office have issued some funds to various public primary and middle schools.

Issuing lunch vouchers is part Taichung City's winter break meal policy, and convenience stores have joined in the efforts to make it more convenient for students to buy food.

After Taichung City and County were integrated this year, 5000 more people than last year have applied for the vouchers.

Students in the meal program are given 50NT dollars for 24 days.

The city government's estimated budget fund of 18 million NT dollars and the prosecutorial office's 20 thousand NT dollar prosecution fund can hopefully ensure that students will get sufficient nutrition during the winter break.

However, despite the integration of the city and county governments and the economic recovery, Taichung City mayor Jason Hu was surprised to learn that the number of applicants for the vouchers have not declined, but instead increased.

According to the Education Bureau of the Taichung City government, low-income families have more difficulty picking themselves back out of a financial pit.

In addition, students who previous sought help from school or volunteer organizations have this year turned to the government for aid instead, resulting in a spike in applicant numbers.

It's essential for everyone to help ensure that these students are fed sufficiently during the winter break.
