A new medical research shows that daily diet soda drinkers are more likely to suffer from vascular complications, including heart attacks and strokes. Exactly how much is too much? Here on CTS, we explain the dangers of drinking these beverages on a daily basis. Many weight conscious people would choose diet soda instead of other sugar-containing beverage to avoid taking in too many calories. However, a U.S. study has shown that people who drink diet soda have around 61% higher risks for stroke and heart attack than those who don't. The numbers come from the Northern Manhattan study, which enrolled about 2,500 adults in the New York area from 1993 to 2001. The study concludes that people who drink diet soda have higher chances of getting strokes and heart diseases compared to the non-drinkers. Even though there's no definite proof that artificial sweetener has a direct influence on the health of heart and blood vessel, the study does raise our concern about diet soda. Domestic dietician offers another explanation by indicating that people often eat greasy food high in calories, such as pizza, hamburgers or fired chicken, along with diet soda, and it is probably another factor that influences people's cardiovascular health.
