An elderly woman in Taichung has been forced to support her three grandchildren alone since her debt-ridden son and daughter-in-law abandoned the family several years ago. At one point, this underprivileged household even had to share one cold pill due to difficulties in paying medical bills. Now, thanks to the help of many kind individuals, their life has taken a turn for the better.

Last May, when CTS reporters visited this disadvantaged family in Taichung,

cold pills had to be split and shared among the elderly lady and her three grandchildren, two boys and a girl,

because the household of four could not afford to pay for the health insurance of the little ones,

who had been suspended from the national healthcare program due to unpaid fees of over 200,000 NT dollars.

These children are not orphans,

but both their parents went into hiding about four years ago over debts, and haven't come back, leaving the kids' grandmother to support the family alone by selling self-grown vegetables.

Life was extremely hard for them.

But the CTS coverage last year has apparently made a difference.

Upon a recent revisit, the elderly lady gladly showed our reporters the newly issued health insurance cards of her grandchildren,

acquired through the assistance of kind-hearted strangers,

who have also donated this brand new LCD TV to them,

and helped to repair their leaky ceiling.

Although life is still difficult, it's no longer cruel.

And now the only thing this grandmother of three wants is simply for all these kids to grow up safe and healthy.
