The Tungshih area in Taichung City was a very prosperous location fifty years ago, because of the lumbering industry and the major national construction projects nearby. However, after the government halted the lumbering business, the population has drastically dropped to around 50,000 people. Here on CTS, follow our camera for a glimpse of this once-booming town.

Tungshih is a Hakka town. In early years, the lumbering business at Dashuesan was at its peak.

The town was once claimed to have packed with nightclubs, tea houses and hotels some 50 years ago since it was at the origin of the Central Cross-Island Highway.

But since the lumbering business stopped and the various natural disasters ravaged Central Taiwan, the town gradually lost its prosperity.

As the visitor number drops, the hospitality businesses are on the decline.

The town used to have 30 some hotels and now only 9 left.

But thanks to its moderate pricing, they become the favorite places to stay for backpackers.

There were five hotels on the old street of Tungshih but they were gone after the earthquake, only the Fushan hotel, where the Tungshih People's Association is at, leaves one room for visitors who come to view the rise and decline of the hospitality and entertainment business in the old Hakka town.
