During an inspection visit to the Atomic Energy Council yesterday, President Ma Ying-jeou said that there will be no major changes in Taiwan's nuclear policy, and the existing nuclear plants will continue to be in operation with enhanced safety measures. Ma also stressed that if the situation gets truly desperate, the government will not hesitate to destroy the reactors to ensure the safety of the people.

Japan is facing an unfolding nuclear crisis after a radiation leak.

In response to that, the Ma administration has convened two high-ranking official meetings within four days to discuss how the government should respond.

When President Ma Ying-jeou visited the Atomic Energy Council this morning, he commented on nuclear safety, saying that the government will be determined to stop the operation of the 2nd and the 3rd nuclear power plant, when it is absolutely necessary.

So far, the situation is not happening yet but the government will look into the issues.

The Legislative Yuan has passed the proposal, asking the 4th nuclear power plant, which is currently under construction, to raise the level of shockproof system or stop the construction.

President Ma said specifically that he would ask the nuclear power plant to have a better protection and his administration is not afraid to give the order to destroy reactors when an emergency happens.

In that case, minister of the Atomic Energy Council will be responsible for such decision and will have to report to the Cabinet before or after the action is taken given the emergency level.
