News stories of Japan's earthquake these days have posed psychological burdens on some people in Taiwan, who feel frightened and disturbed by the disastrous events. Doctors now advise that those who suffer from insomnia or feel stressed after watching the news should stay away from it and seek medical help if such symptoms persist.

Although media reports allow the Taiwanese public immediately access to what is going in Japan after the March 11 quake and tsunami, they have caused great stress and anxiety among many people.

Neurologists say that the quake and tsunami, along with the radiation leakage, have indeed caused many individuals with medical records of mental health problems to feel anxious.

Many local news stations not only continue to report on the disaster but some even go as far as to exaggerate the disaster situation.

Medical experts are urging those who feel anxiety from watching the news reports to switch off their television and temporarily avoid hearing any more news reports on the matter.

In addition, medical experts have pointed out that following the 921 earthquake, a medical team especially tending to families of victims found that out of 120 of such families,

36% suffer from post traumatic stress syndrome, 15% suffered from serious depression, 10% had severe re-adjustment issues, and 3% turn to alcohol as an escape.

Women tend to suffer much more than men.

The devastation in Japan may likely require a great readjustment period for many.
