Following the deadly nightclub fire in Taichung earlier this month, the Ministry of the Interior now plans to improve public safety by setting up a fire prevention certification system as well as enforcing tighter control on the capacity limits of buildings. And the detailed procedures of implementation will be proposed within one month.

The fire that broke out at the Taichung night club claimed nine lives.

Although the cause of the fire remains under investigation, legislators are expressing concern and raising issues over public fire safety.

Minister of Interior, Jiang Yi-huah says that she will push forth a fire safety certification system which will include the certification of public venues and objects.

Jiang says that the ministry will approach the policy-making decisions from a legal as well as a pragmatic perspective.

In addition to fire precaution, the new system is intended to impose controls on the number of people entering a public venue.

In looking for someone to pin the blame for the Taichung blaze, many people are looking towards the public safety routine reports conducted by Taichung City Government.

Many DPP legislators are also pointing fingers at Taichung City Mayor Jason Hu.

Minister of Executive Yuan, Wu Den-yih has emphasized that while investigations by the executive administration and local prosecutorial office continue, an inspection unit formed jointly by the Ministry of Justice and Ministry of Interior will conduct examinations on fire safety in all five municipalities.
