The World Vision is stepping in to help the local government with the increase of child abuse cases in Taiwan, by holding an international conference to discuss the underlying causes of the violent behavior. According to the latest stats, 5,000 more incidents have been reported in 2010 compared to 2009, totaling up to 18,000 tragic events last year.

Last week, a young mother and a man she met online tortured her two-year old child to death. In another recent case, a single mother arrived at a police station with her child in her arms.

Her live-in boyfriend was a drug addict, and threw her child across the room in anger when he couldn't find money for drugs.

According to statistics, a parent or primary caretaker is the perpetrator in 80% of all child abuse cases.

Ministry of the Interior statistics further show that the number of reported child abuse cases rose from 7,837 in 2004 to more than 18,000 in 2010.

Despite Taiwan's extremely low birth rate, the number of child abuse cases continues rising. World Vision recently organized a child protection conference to provide the government with relevant policies and recommendations.
