We usually give our pets treats as a reward or just because we love them. However, veterinarians have seen an increase in the cases of dogs choked by round-shaped treats over the last ten months. Regarding the situation, animal groups said that there are no rules in governing food for pets, resulting in many unsafe products.

With no clear labeling on some of them, experts are reminding the owners to carefully select suitable snacks for their companions.

While dogs are certainly having a great time enjoying snacks, these doggy treats may be deadly, especially the round-shaped jerky.

Within ten months, a vet clinic has treated 10 small breed dogs, which were found to have the kind of jerky stuck in their esophagus.

After an emergent operation, the nine dogs survive and one died.

In fact, there are quite a few problems for pet snacks.

For example, it's impossible for consumers to know if the expensive snack is indeed organic as it claims to be.

The pack of snack claims to have added shark cartilage but no one knows if it really has the health effects.

Animal activists criticize that the Council for Agriculture was corrected by the Control Yuan in 2009 for its lack of proper management.

But almost three years have passed, nothing is done yet.

The pet industry is now estimated to have 50 billion NTD worth of production value each year. But the passive attitude of the authority in charge may inadvertently cause damages to pets and their owners.
