April 4th is also the day to commemorate the death of Dr. Chang Chi-lang and his two sons, who were killed for wrongful claims of being involved in the plan of political assassination during the turmoil of the 228 Incident. As 64 years have passed, the Chang family is still urging the government to investigate into the tragedy and redeem their names after the false accusations that were imposed on the whole family.

The National 228 Museum held a special memorial event on April 4th to commemorate a family that was victimized in the aftermath of the 228 Incident.

The service was held for Chang Chi-lang, who was killed 64 years ago on April 4th along with his sons Chang Tsung-jen and Chang Kuo-jen.

Both the father and sons were shot innocently in a public cemetery leading to profound feelings of sadness for generations.

In 1947, the 228 Incident led to this unfortunate action at of Chang Chi-lang's hospital in Hualien's Fonglin.

Chang had been nominated to run in Hualien County Magistrate elections later that year, indicating local admiration by the people. Still, on this fateful day, all three were detained and executed outside of town.

This was the first memorial ceremony held by Chang Chi-lang's family at the National 228 Museum.

They have donated relics from his life and work as a doctor and President Ma personally apologized to the victims and hoped that people could learn more from this unfortunate period of Taiwan history.
