President Ma Ying-jeou inaugurated a squadron of missile ships at the naval base in Suao of Yilan County earlier this week. During the ceremony, Ma emphasized that China remains the biggest military threat to Taiwan despite warming cross-strait relations, and he vowed to continue the ROC's military buildup to upgrade its defense capabilities.

During the launch ceremony of the Kuang Hua VI class missile boat on Wednesday, President Ma Ying-jeou said that the navy's key missions are fortifying the nation through armament for asymmetric battle and personnel training.

Ma noted that improved cross-strait relations have not been reflected in changes or reductions to China's military composition, and said that Taiwan must stop war but not fear war, and prepare for war but not seek war.

The president said that warfare cannot be used to resolve cross-strait issues, but that Taiwan must be prepared for any eventuality. Therefore, the armed forces must be trained to use the weapons in Taiwan's artillery.

While Taiwan cannot compete with China in military spending, it needs to exhibit its military prowess through available resources.

Ma reiterated that China remains Taiwan's largest threat to national defense, and said that the national military must be prepared to protect the safety of the people.
