A large-scale job fair was held by the government last weekend in celebration of Labor Day, with President Ma Ying-jeou and Premier Wu Den-yih both in attendance for the opening ceremony. Ma said in his speech that Taiwan's unemployment rate has already been in decline for 19 consecutive months, and he promised to keep making improvements in the protection of labor rights.

President Ma Ying-jeou and Premier Wu Den-yih along with Labor Minister Jennifer Wang held a joint press conference to launch a job fair. The opening of this event was specifically timed to coincide with May Day.

President Ma expressed hope that the event will allow more people the opportunity to gain employment.

This large-scale job fair had 100 companies offering a total of 6,000 jobs.

Despite these government efforts, labor groups were still unhappy, as many have seen their salaries cut and labor rights being sacrificed.

This has resulted in workers being treated unfairly with many labor unions deciding to take to the streets in a May Day protest.

Premier Wu Den-yih said his government had allowed the Three Labor Laws indicating it did pay attention to labor rights groups. Ma responded to the labor demonstration and said he was concerned about the employment status of workers.

He also said he would respect public opinion and seek ways to improve.
