The Kaohsiung International Travel Fair has attracted a large crowd of domestic visitors, hoping to take advantage of the 50 percent discounts on tour packages to Japan. Attractive package deal offers at the Kaohsiung summer tour exhibition attracted a throng of consumers on the first day of the event. The most attractive offer at the exhibition is a 3 days, 2 nights self-guided tour to Tokyo for 7600 NT dollars, Osaka for 7150 NT dollars, and Fukushima for only 5800 NT dollars. Each tour package is selling at roughly half the price it was last year. Despite the great deals, many consumers are still concerned about travel safety in Japan. Even the Japanese representative office went down for the first time to Kaoshiung to set up a booth to sell tour packages. Following the recent Japanese earthquake, several people are still concerned about safety and the quality of the tour packages, and low tour package prices won't necessarily attract customers. Tour agencies are mentally prepared for a low outcome from the four-day exhibition, setting their target revenue at only half of last year's. While the number of international red eye flights to Japan have been slashed, the domestic tour industry is hoping to capitalize further on the recent national employee pay increase and have marked up their tour package prices from 100 to 1000 NT dollars.
