In an effort to make it affordable for people to buy houses, the Ministry of the Interior has proposed its latest policy at the Legislature, which will extend the mortgage duration from 20 years to 30 years. However, many lawmakers are opposing to this idea, saying that it will turn young individuals into "home mortgage slaves". While presenting a report on the government's newest residential policies, Interior Minister Jiang Yi-huah found himself being attacked by lawmakers. The Ministry of the Interior is currently assessing a new policy that would preserve 5% of units in "appropriate residences" for renters and ban sales of units in public housing projects by 2014. Legislators say that every ministry has its own policy, and that the government is causing mass confusion. Lawmakers are also up in arms over the MOI's plan to extend housing loans for young homebuyers from 20 years to 30 years, which they say will turn young people into "mortgage slaves." The Council for Economic Planning and Development has proposed a "sale of surface rights only" residential policy, while Taipei City has implemented a "rental only" policy at public housing projects.
