GREAT ACTOR, GREATER MAN

For people under thirty years of age, Sun Yue is the kind, grandfatherly figure who never seems tired of promoting social causes for the public good.

But they probably do not know that before Sun devoted his life to non-profit endeavors, he was a beloved comedian as well as an accomplished character actor, having won the Golden Horse Award for Best Actor in 1983 with his performance in "Papa, Can You Hear Me Sing?"

"And the award for best leading actor goes to..."

"Mr. Sun Yue!"

"At 51, I released my first album.

At 52, I became a coffee pitchman.

Now at 53, I'm a Golden Horse winner."

Sun's acting career actually started by coincidence. In the 1930's, Sun joined the Nationalist Army at the age of 16 in Zhejiang, China, and he later moved to Taiwan along with the army in 1949.

It was in the military that he first got the chance to be an actor.

"When they found that I had the desire to perform,

that I was interested in acting,

I was recruited to become

a stage actor in the military.

For the next 14 years, I acted in stage plays.

And then I did films."

After spending nearly 20 years playing villains or serious dramatic roles in films, Sun reinvented himself as a comedian in late 1970's, appearing in TV sketches with Chang Hsiao-yen.

"I never made you worry.

I follow you everyday.

I'm the best child."

"Why dont you listen to me, boy!"

But as a funnyman, Sun may be best remembered for his comic pairing with Tao Da-wei.

"Today I have to admit that

if Sun Yue doesn't appear in my show,

it would seem like a mistake."

"So here I am in your show..."

"Now I find it a bigger mistake!"

And the hilarious duo even recorded an album together.

"Tao Da-wei,

Chang Hsiao-yen,

We are the best of friends.

Having worked together in the past,

We always made fun of each other.

So decades later,

while still bantering back and forth,

we also cherish our friendship all the more."

In 1989, Sun announced his retirement from show business, and vowed to spend the rest of his life on public welfare undertakings.

Over the past two decades, he used every bit of his influence to promote worthy causes, such as blood donation, anti-smoking awareness, hospice care, and a wide range of charities.

Now at the age of 80, Sun is still as committed to public welfare as ever.

And his motto has not changed since the day he left his acting career behind.

"If there's anything I should say to myself,

I'd repeat what I said 21 years ago.

Its all about public welfare, not about Sun Yue.
