The food safety panic continues to spread as investigators found another company, Pin Han Perfumery Co, had added plasticizer in the clouding agent for various foods and even for syrups.

To further protect the health of the public, the Department of Health has ordered that soft drinks, jelly, fruit jams and food powder in capsules without food safety certificates must be removed from shelves starting today.##

As investigators continue to search and track down Yu Shen Company's downstream beverage or food distributors, they have found another company, Pin Han Perfumery Co, which is alleged to add harmful DINP, which is normally used in making plastic toys, into the clouding agent for food.

According to the health officials, Pin Han has a larger distribution channel than Yu Shen's and has been selling plasticizer containing clouding agent for over 30 years to manufacturers who produce cookies, ice cream, bread, beverage, dairy products, and even instant noodles.

Food and Drug Administration Director-General Kang Jaw-jou said DINP is a chemical similar to DEHP, which are both commonly used in making plastic products.

Up till now, more than 50,000 cartons of sports drink and around 36,500 cartons of asparagus juice, as well as 128kg of clouding agent used by Uni--President Enterprises Corp in Greater Tainan, have been seized.

Health officials have also seized thousands of cartons of sports drinks made by big food companies such as Maida Foods Corp and Tai Hwa Oil Industrial Co.

Prosecutors said that about 156 manufacturers have used DINP or DEHP containing clouding agent in their products, with around 500 products being taken off the shelves island wide.

However, health officials are afraid that the list will add up as the investigation goes on.

Besides food and beverages, it is also found that a company, Chuanlin International Trade Co., has been selling strawberry- and grape-flavored syrup that was contaminated with clouding agents.

Chuanlin got the products from Chinchuan Co., which received clouding agents mixed with plasticizers from Yu Shen Chemicals Co.

The New Taipei City government has therefore conducted an investigation and ordered Chuanlin to recall all of its sweetening syrup products from clinics and drugstores, unless they can prove that the syrup is safe to consume.

To avoid panic from parents, Taiwan Medical Association has asked physicians to stop prescribing syrups.

To ease public concern over the food safety, Department of Health has demanded 25 public hospitals to set up dedicated clinics.

Furthermore, the DOH has ordered to include six kinds of plasticizers including DEHP, DINP, DNOP, DIDP, DBP and BBP into the regular food safety inspection.

Still, health experts said that even though it's legal to add food additives in food products, some food additives are not as healthy as we imagine, such as color additives that may cause Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in children.

To avoid eating too much chemical stuff, people are advised to eat natural foods, rather than over-processed foods.
