Swimming is a great way to cool off during hot summer days, but the Kaohsiung City government has found that the bacteria count in many of the city's swimming pools and the SPA facilities far exceeds the standard, with nearly 50% of the businesses failing to pass the inspection.

A cool dip in the swimming pool under a hot summer sun is definitely one of life's greatest pleasures, but do you know if the water is clean enough?

The Kaohsiung City Government has conducted a random inspection on water quality of the city's swimming pools, sauna and other facilities

and has found that the bacterial count in many of the tested services exceeds the safety standard.

Among the 9 tested swimming pools, four of them failed to meet the standard, while two among them have failed to pass the inspection for the third time so far.

Kaohsiung City's Department of Health pointed out the bacteria count of the swimming pool in Kaohsiung University is between 2,600 to 3,200 per liter, while the figure in the municipal Chien Jen swimming pool is 1,100, which both far exceeded the standard of bacteria count of 500 per liter.

The bacteria counts in spa services in Ambassador Hotel, Grand Hi-Lai Spring Hill Resort are too far to be counted.

According to the health officials, if people accidentally drink the water that contains high bacterial count, they could develop symptoms such as diarrhea or vomiting.

The health officials have demanded the service operators to improve the water quality within two weeks.
