With the island opening up for Mainland students for the first time, we will be seeing more than 1,200 students from China attending the undergraduate and graduate programs in the universities of Taiwan starting next semester. Tamkang University and Fujen Catholic University are leading the rest for having the highest number of Mainland students. With the frequent exchange across the Straits, the Taiwanese government has opened its doors to Mainland Chinese high school students who want to study in Taiwan's colleges. With their scores of the college entrance exam in six coastal cities, Chinese students can apply to study in Taiwan's private universities or the two national universities in outlying islands. "1,569 Chinese students applied for Taiwan's universities, and averagely speaking, one student applies for 3.6 schools. The final result is total 1,015 students got admitted." Among the schools that accept Chinese students, the most popular schools are Fengjia University and Fujen Catholic University, which received 678 applications. Fujen Catholic University planned to recruit 40 Chinese students, but at the end it accepted additional 59 students. Finance, Law, Journalism and Psychology are the most preferred departments. The school says that most Chinese students choose to study at departments of finance, economics, law, mass communications, mathematics, physics, chemistry and social science, which is quite different from Taiwanese students' preferences. Fengjia University in Central Taiwan received 442 applications. Although it planned to recruit 61 students, only 34 got admitted. One thing that's noteworthy is that schools in Southern Taiwan are apparently less favored than their northern counterparts. Some schools believe it is probably because schools have offered programs that don't suit the applicants' needs. According to I-Shou University, the school only offers industrial programs for Chinese applicants, who prefer economics and finance. Mainland Chinese Joint Admissions Committee added that many schools in the south have set their minimum admission requirement to attract high quality Chinese students, who actually prefer schools in Northern Taiwan. ◆ 追蹤更多華視影音及圖文新聞: 1.用Plurk追蹤華視影音及圖文新聞:追蹤 2.用Twitter追蹤華視影音及圖文新聞:追蹤
