More than 10 million people are in need of food in the African region, and have since fled to its neighboring countries, including to Ethiopia and also Kenya's refugee camps in search of assistance. Over 30 percent of children are believed to be suffering from acute malnutrition, with two people or 4 children dying of starvation everyday out of a group of 10,000 people.

UN has since declared a famine in the two southern parts of Somalia, which is the first time the nation has experienced famine in 19 years. According to the UN humanitarian coordinator for Somalia, about 300 million U.S dollars would be needed to help with the dire situation in the next two months.
