Amid the scare over chemical food additives, the food safety certification is now becoming a hot issue on the table.

In support of the plan, the Executive Yuan has also expressed their hope of establishing the food safety inspection system as soon as possible.

As plasticizer impacts the food safety across the country, the Executive Yuan is once again proposing the implementation of food safety certification system.

The Executive Yuan said that it has held meetings to discuss the establishment of the system, which will demand the Council of Agriculture to inspect the quality of agricultural produce, and asks the Department of Health to monitor the food safety of processed foods, while the Industrial Development Bureau will be responsible of issuing certificates of the sales channels.

The three organizations will closely monitor the food safety through joint efforts.

"We encourage famers and food manufacturers to do their own food safety certificates.

The ultimate goal is to establish a complete food safety certification system, from production to sales.

The Department of Health has already established a comprehensive certification system on medications,

as well as classifying food into six categories."

We hope that through the joint effort of the Industrial Development Bureau,

Department of Health, and Council of Agriculture,

we can establish a complete food safety certificates.

This is what we are trying to do now.

Experts said that it's good that the government is planning to establish the food safety certificates, however, the certificates should serve more than presenting the records of food production.

For processed foods, there should be food safety technicians to monitor the quality and proper amount of food additives.

Following several major food safety violations, such as Malachite green containing fish, pork from pigs that died of diseases in 2005, and melamine milk in 2008, the Department of Health has demanded label of origin on all food products.

However, even after these serious incidents, the authorities haven't really established a comprehensive system that can truly safeguard the food safety for the public.

Food safety experts also urge the government to enhance its supervision over the food safety by learning from the U.S. and European countries, where the food manufacturers are required to disclose the information regarding production process and even the origin of food.
