These lanterns represent a brighter future for Japan, which has suffered tremendous losses since an earthquake six months ago. Hundreds gathered to release nearly 1,000 paper lanterns into the sky. The event took place in Soma City, just 24 miles from the country's now famous nuclear Fukushima plant.

One of the harder hit areas, Soma lost 459 people. In addition to those losses, Japan has suffered great uncertainly due to radiation concerns from Fukushima. Mounted samurai in traditional armor also participated in the event and Soma's mayor rallied the crowd to focus on better days ahead.
