Luc Besson's new flick "The Lady," which portrays the life of Myanmar pro democracy leader and Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, has premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this week.

Both the director, and actress Michelle Yeoh were greeted by passionate fans outside the Roy Thomson Hall.

However, the movie was not welcomed by the Myanmar authorities during its filming.

Michelle Yeoh, who portrays Suu Kyi in "The Lady", was targeted by Myanmar government for taking on the political role. She was also not allowed to enter Myanmar and was deported without a reason upon her arrival back in June.

Despite the unpleasant experience, Yeoh said she still would like to visit the country someday in the future.

In describing her character as the human rights fighter, Yeoh said, that even after her extensive research on Suu Kyi's life, she was still surprised by what she learned from the filming, which also details Suu Kyi's separation from her late British husband Michael Aris when she was detained in 1989.

"When we first came upon the story what struck us most was it wasn't just that it was set in a political background, but it was an incredible love story of a man and a woman who supported each other whole heartedly and they knew that in case one day her country ever called, she wouldn't have to take the choice on her own. She would have support of her husband Michael Aris. So it was an incredible journey."

As for director Luc Besson, he said he believes the story is an important one to bring to the world.

"She is fighting for her country, she gives basically her love, her kids, her life, she gives everything to her country. And it's such an example and she basically tells us we have the freedom. We can move, we can write papers and sometimes we forgot, how cool it is to be free. So she is here to remind us that we should enjoy it and cherish it, and protect it."

Yeoh: "She has just been released for house arrest for five months and still things have not moved on the way we would hope that the Burmese people would have the kind of rights that we all would enjoy today."

Even with intervention from the Myanmar authorities, Besson said one of the biggest challenges of making the film was trying to make it as real as possible without having met the influential leader prior to filming. However, he did have a chance to meet her afterwards and describes her as an inspiration.

"She is the most beautiful woman I ever met."

"The Lady" is scheduled to hit U.S. theaters this fall.
