Television megastar, Oprah, who was nominated for a best supporting actress Oscar 25 years ago in "The Colour Purple", was among three honorees to receive Oscar statuettes over the weekend, at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

However, this time, Oprah was not chosen for her acting role, but for her role in real-life, for her efforts in promoting hope and goodwill around the world.

Oprah received a special Oscar last Saturday night, as the Board of Governors honored her with the coveted Jean Herscholt Humanitarian Award, an award given to honor those for their outstanding contributions to humanitarian causes.

With tears in her eyes, Oprah thanked the Board of Governors for giving her such an honor.

"It's unimaginable that I would be standing before you. Voted by the Board of Governors. It's unimaginable. It's unimaginable. Unimaginable. It is unimaginable. And so, when I say thank you, the thank you comes from a place even deeper than I know."

She said she will place this award on her desk, to remind her to continue her humanitarian work, and not to disappoint those who voted for her.

"What this really means is that you all understand that what I've been trying to do and what I've tried to say all these years, is that all of us can make a difference through the life that we live.

And when you understand as I do, that this to me, I'm going to allow this Oscar, like I've interviewed everybody over the years, and say, 'Where do you keep your Oscar?' And people always so nonchalant about it, and say, 'Oh my, I keep it in my bathroom.

I don't know where mine is. My sister has it.' Well, my new sister, my sister who I just discovered last year. This time last year, is here. Pat is here. I will say, 'She will not have it.' I will have it. And I will keep it on my desk in front of me to remind me that you have voted for me.

You have voted for what I believe is the essence of why we are all here. We are all here to help each other. We are all here to use our lives in service to one and other."

Oprah has contributed more than 500 million dollars to charities causes. In 1998, she created the Oprah's Angel Network, which supported charitable projects and provided grants to nonprofit organizations around the globe.

And to provide a nurturing educational environment for academically gifted girls who come from disadvantaged backgrounds, she opened the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa in 2007.
