Protesters are out en masse for the fifth consecutive day in downtown Cairo. Police fire tear gas, bird shot and rubber bullets.

Demonstrators respond by hurling stones. They're calling for civil disobedience if the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces does not meet their demands, which include the handover of power to a civilian government and compensation for families of those killed in clashes.

Egypt's army-backed government said it was preparing to move ousted President Hosni Mubarak to a Cairo prison hospital in an apparent bid to calm protests, but the move has failed to quell the unrest.

The latest wave of violence began when at least 74 people were killed after a soccer match in the Mediterranean city of Port Said. Many of the demonstrators believe that Egypt's security forces are responsible for the deaths. (Travis Brecher/ Reuters)
