The Agriculture and Food Agency is stepping up to help buy bananas from farmers who have been facing insufficient banana sales. However, farmers are upset that the agency is purchasing the bananas at a price far less than the cost of growing them.
An angry farmer picks up a hand of bananas and slams it on the ground as though he were throwing away garbage. This year's bananas are large and plump, but sales have been sluggish at best. The Agriculture and Food Agency recently purchased 3,000 tons of bananas from local farmers at the price of 5 NT per kilogram. However, farmers say that it costs them 10 NT per kilogram to grow bananas, and that they feel extremely helpless about the situation.
Dozens of farmers loaded bananas into their cars and rushed to the AFA's food processing plant, where they were forced to wait in line behind dozens of other cars. However, as it's banana season and sales are slow, no farmer returned home with more than 300 NT.
