A structural change in Taiwan's public education system may be on the way. A proposal to move sixth graders from elementary schools to junior highs has been brought up by experts, in order to better prepare children for adolescence. However, some parents are less sure of the necessity for such a change.

Many of the female six-graders playing on the court are not like typical grade school kids anymore for they have hit puberty early.

Children now are maturing faster than before, mentally and physically.

Many scholars are suggesting to change the current 6 year grade school, 3 years of junior high and 3 years of high school education system to 5 years of elementary school, 4 years of junior high and 4 years of high school instead.

According to Hsieh Wen Chuen, many countries in Europe and north America have already changed the system, with Germany elementary school being only 4 years, French elementary school is five years while the school system is changing in the U.S.

Some elementary school principals agree with the suggestion, however, they also suggest that the national education system should start even earlier.

Many students and their parents are, however, not optimistic about shortening a year from elementary school.

The whole process could take years with legislature needing to pass many amendments while school arrangements, teacher qualification, curriculum, tools are all issues.

The National Alliance of Parents Organization said that, it welcomes a review on elementary and junior school systems on the ground of starting 12 years mandatory education without high school competence test, otherwise the change would only give the children more pressure.
