Taichung City is getting ready to implement the first domestic bus rapid transit system or BRT. At the earliest, construction will begin next year. The BRT's major difference when compared to other public busses is that it will have its own 20 kilometer lane with shorter waits for stop lights. However, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications has only approved a budget to study the plan as the local and central government will have to come up with the rest of the funding.
Chungkang Road has a high density of busses, and if there was a dedicated bus lane and specially equipped bus station,
with low chassis electric busses operating on a bus rapid transit system or BRT that linked to two or three cars together and operated faster than a than a typical bus with shorter stops for traffic lights.
Taichung City's BRT plan has received approval from the Ministry of Transportation and Communications who has agreed to set aside 5 million NT$ for researching this plan.
The Taichung City Government has made a public announcement, that "at the earliest, construction will begin next year," with work expected to "take one year.
The 1.2 bn NT$ cost for this 20km route along Chung Kang Road from the Taichung Train Station to Tunghai University with the possibility of extending to Taichung County, will adopt an MRT model for fees.
However, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications has not agreed to fully subsidize construction of the line.
Chung Kang Road sees an hourly volume of 6,000 people, with the future BRT line being able to transport 20,000 people.
The Ministry of Transportation and Communications has permitted the beginning of a Blue MRT line as Taichung City's Department of Transportation hopes the BRT will be helped by those traveling on the MRT though its impact this 1.2 bn NT$ BRT project remains to be seen.
