The Taipei County Education Bureau has annouced earlier this month that it would no longer offer teachers administrative holidays, causing an uproar among teachers around the county.

Beginning next month, teachers will no longer be able to use public holidays or cancel classes to handle administrative work.

The Taipei County Education Bureau informed county schools on August 2nd that it would be canceling the Taipei County Teachers' Association's work holidays this fall.

Association officials feel that the government had no right to make a unilateral decision,

while the National Teachers' Association and the Humanistic Education Foundation are accusing the county government of waging white terror on Taipei County teachers for their opposition to the new life class policy.

In a statement released through the Secondary and Elementary School Principals Association of the Republic of China, the Education Bureau denied the accusation and said that the current system detrimentally affects the rights of both students and other teachers.

The Taipei County Teachers' Association is the largest municipal teachers' organization in Taiwan, with membership of around 14,000.

Association officials say that their top priority is ensuring that the organization continues functioning, and that it will have to deal with the other issue at a later date.
