Many international oceanic liners are reported to be using the marine areas off Taiwan as the natural garbage dump of their wastewater and rubbish. The Oceanic Technology Center hopes to use less than 3 years time to set up surveillance system to monitor any possible illegal dumping or contamination of the ocean. From Malaka or the Indian Ocean, those oceanic liners or tankers would need to travel through the Taiwan Strait of Pacific ocean east of Taiwan to get to the Northeastern Asian countries. Many accidents would happen on those waters, for example, 10 years ago, Greek Cargo ship Amastris was grounded off the coast of Kengting. Thousand tons of oil spill ruined the coral reefs. Some of the ocean liners would even dump garbage off the coast of Taiwan. Though an island, Taiwan is not sufficient in oceanic knowledge. The Oceanic technology research center that was founded 2 years ago is aggressively hoping to build enough observation centers of the sea, cultivating the ability to monitor the ocean and prevent ship from illegally polluting the ocean. The supervisor of the center said that, once the pollution of the ocean occurs, the ocean current direction must be know immediately for calculation of the affected areas in order to increase the rescue efforts, minimizing the harm to the oceanic eco system. ◆ 追蹤更多華視影音及圖文新聞: 1.用Plurk追蹤華視影音及圖文新聞:追蹤 2.用Twitter追蹤華視影音及圖文新聞:追蹤
