Beware of the toys your children are playing with, because the latest report shows that many of them contain high levels of heavy metals and other dangerous chemicals including plasticizers. Experts say the best way to protect your little ones from potential harm is to prevent them from putting toys into their mouths and make sure they wash their hands after playing with it.

These Korean style dolls are popular with young girls though they contain hidden dangers as the Bureau of Standards Meteorology and Inspection and a Consumer's Foundation sample found that this doll's plasticizers exceeded standards by 117 times.

Heavy metals are also 2.8 times more than standard levels as this green marine animal piggy banks was also found to have a plasticizer that exceeded standards by 126 times.

It is intriguing to find that these toys which failed to meet standards had all been affixed with the BSMI label.

The group said that this was because standards for plasticizers were announced in 2008, and many of these dolls were produced in 2006, making it difficult to enforce.

And Toys R Us, said that only around 100 of these Korean dolls have been sold in the last 5 years as it was sold out long ago though consumers who are worried can get a full refund.

Public concern over this issue including the fact that even those with the BSMI certification may be unsafe has led the Consumers' Foundation to remind parents of children not to put toys into the mouth.

They also should remember to wash their hands after playing with toys and reduce their exposure to plasticizers and heavy metals.
